We are a nut free school. If your child brings a lunch or snack to school, please make sure it is nut-free. This includes foods such as peanut or other nut butters, as well as milks/beverages with a nut base (i.e. almond milk), and cookies/brownies that contain nuts.
Meals:
We will have a snack at 9:45 daily, and will eat lunch at 11:30.
We welcome any contributions you can make for snack. We will have fresh fruit, as well as goldfish crackers and cookies on occasion from our kitchen. However, the children often like a variety to choose from and this is a prime time to work on requesting. A snack item your child likes is often a favorite for other children. Favorites include mini cookies, animal or graham crackers, fruit snacks, fruit bars, and various cereals. Fruits such as berries, oranges or grapes cut in half are welcomed as well.
Our school offers breakfast and hot lunches for purchase, or you may qualify for our Free or Reduced Lunch Program. If you believe that your family income may make you eligible for Free or Reduced school lunches, please ask at the front office how you can apply. Menus for hot lunches will be sent home the first week of each month.
In the beginning it is important for the children to learn the routine and be motivated to sit with us during meal times. Please send in foods that your child likes to eat. As children become more familiar with the routine we can discuss ways we can help your child eat non-preferred foods if that is an issue at home.
Kids in the Kitchen
At times, we will also do cooking projects so the children can share the experience of preparing, then eating food they have made. This activity is beneficial for a number of reasons.
We will send home a request of ingredients a week prior to when we need them. Please indicate what you may be able to contribute so we can ensure we don't get too much or too little of an item. Typically we will do our cooking on Fridays, and will prepare the same recipe for two weeks in a row.
Look for the recipes in your child's communication folder. We will send you the same format we will use at school, with the same pictures/sequence and language your child will experience at school. Feel free to share any suggestions of simple recipes or family favorites.

At times, we will also do cooking projects so the children can share the experience of preparing, then eating food they have made. This activity is beneficial for a number of reasons.
- social: sharing meals, passing bowls and spoons from one child to another to stir, passing out plates/bowls/cups to friends, singing food related songs, using language to make observations & requests, as well as increase related vocabulary
- sensory: foods come in a variety of textures, colors and tastes. Sometimes cooking is a simple way to get a child involved in touching and tasting unfamiliar foods
- fine motor: cutting fruit, picking up and adding small items, scooping and pouring, stirring with a spoon
- pre-academic: step-by-step sequencing as we follow the recipe, counting as each takes a turn stirring before passing to a friend.Often the recipes we choose will have a tie to a book we are reading
